Peter (also called Simon Peter or Cephas) was a fisherman from Galilee whom Jesus called to be one of the twelve apostles. Impulsive and devoted, he confessed Jesus as the Christ, denied him three times before the crucifixion, and after the resurrection became a leader of the early church. Two New Testament letters bear his name.
